On January 14, 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a
health alert warning against the use of adamantane derivatives, amantadine and rimantadine, for the treatment or prophylaxis of influenza during the 2005-2006 season. Influenza viruses currently circulating in the United States are resistant to adamantanes.
The CDC's interim recommendation is that adamantanes not be used for the treatment or prophylaxis of influenza A in the United States for the remainder of the 2005-2006 flu season. Instead, the CDC recommends that neuraminidase inhibitors, oseltamivir or zanamivir, be selected if an antiviral medication is to be used. For the 2005-2006 season, all influenza viruses from the United States that have been screened for antiviral resistance at CDC have demonstrated susceptibility to the neuraminidase inhibitors. Tamiflu (oseltamivir), a neuraminidase inhibitor, has been proven effective in the treatment and prevention of influenza in adults and children one year and older.
